The Most Promising Young Male Cricketer of the Year Award

2024 Matthew Hurst (Lancashire)

The Winners are decided by The Cricket Society Executive based upon a report provided by the Statistical Officer of The Cricket Society.

In a poor 2024 season for Lancashire, when the county suffered four innings defeats, Matthew played all the County Championship games and was frequently called upon to dig his team out of trouble, usually coming in at No6 with few runs on the board. He made five fifties and one century in 677 runs averaging 32.23.

That in itself would be impressive enough for any 20-year-old but Matty, as he is known to his colleagues, also kept wicket in smart and effective manner fending off the claims for the keeper’s gloves from George Bell and George Lavelle, taking 41 catches and making 1 stumping in 14 championship matches.

In addition, Matty played in Lancashire’s T20 Blast team and batted well on several occasions, keeping with his usual efficiency. To cap an excellent year, he was in the Hundred squad of the Manchester Originals.

All of this is an excellent body of work by a young man right at the start of his professional career. Matty is training with the County today so who better to collect the award on his behalf than Warren Hegg a Lancashire wicketkeeper/batter great who for 19 seasons, during which he also played two Test matches for England, held the gloves for the county taking 919 first class dismissals and scoring over 11,300 first class runs.
