2021 Match Reports

25th April v Warborough and Shillingford. Lost by 7 wickets.

Society 162 for 5 dec (Jason Fenn 51, Tom Fenn 48), Warborough 164 for 3 (Tom Fenn 3 for 32)

On an early season track, our total looked competitive, but the Warborough openers took full advantage of any loose deliveries. Tom Fenn, limited to 2 games this year because of army commitments abroad, had an outstanding all round game.

2nd May v Burley Lost by 1 wicket

Society 248 for 4 dec (Jason Fenn 74 retired hurt, Tom Fenn 61, Peter Hardy 48*)

Burley 250 for 9 (Harry Fenn 5 for 46)

A strong batting performance put us in a good position, which might have been better still but for some fine Burley fielding and Jason Fenn’s calf injury. Burley attacked from the word go with their Dorset player playing a shot a ball until he became one of Harry Fenn’s five victims. The middle order continued the assault before a flurry of wickets put them 9 down. Society player, Mark Wheeler skippering his home club, featured in a heroic last wicket partnership to deny us a win.

9th May v Northwood Lost by 9 wickets

Society 190 for 8 dec (Sayed Sadat 83), Northwood 196 for 1.

Northwood is an attractive new fixture in NW London. Steady experienced bowling restricted us until an incredible display of hitting from Sayed Sadat. Stand-in skipper, Peter Hardy, steered us to the declaration. For the third week on the trot, the opposition had an opener in destructive form, and we could do little about it.

16th May v Tilford Rain

23rd May v Salfords Rain

30th May v West Hoathly. Lost by 5 wickets.

Society 176 for 7 (Jason Fenn 38 retired hurt) West Hoathly 178 for 5

Crawley Down, our original opponents, were involved in a cup game. As a result, we travelled to the attractive village of West Hoathly. Stuart Cosstick, Peter Hardy and Ronald Paterson all played well without managing to press on. A mid order collapse was followed by excellent batting from Jason Fenn. Alas, a repetition of his calf injury caused his withdrawal from the crease and a few weeks rest. The injury no doubt denied us some valuable extra runs. At tea Ronald Paterson presented Tom Carmichael with his cap for 500 appearances. Ash Saleem was a constant threat to the home batting but local knowledge of the vagaries of the pitch played a role in our defeat.

5th June v Wood Street Village Won by 55 runs

Society 164 for 8 (Ruky Wickremasinghe 58) Wood Street Village 109 for 8 (Paul Fielding 3 for 29)

It has been a while coming, but that elusive first win is now ours. On a difficult track, Rucky Wickremasinghe showed his class and Daniel Humphreys added a valuable 22. Only 3 batsmen made double figures in the reply with Paul Fielding claiming 3 wickets.

12th June v Kew Lost by 50 runs

Kew 238 for 7

Society 188 for 6 (Stuart Cosstick 43, Rob Humphreys 41)

Rob Humphreys lost a vital toss and we faced 40 overs in extremely hot conditions. David Chapman and Andy Sheldon contained the early batting very well and, when Andy lured numbers 3 and 4 out of their ground to be stumped by Tom Carmichael, we were in a good position. Understandably we wilted a little in the heat. Stuart Cosstick batted beautifully against his former club, whilst others also batted well against a useful Kew attack. Despite support from chair, Nigel Hancock, the target was a bit beyond us. With the chances of victory gone, Daniel Humphreys and Seb Price played some attractive shots.

19th  June v Old Leightonians Cancelled

27th June v Crown Taverners Cancelled Rain

4th July v Englefield Green Cancelled Rain

11th July v Britwell Salome  Won by 7 wickets

Britwell Salome 171 for 8 dec (Paul Fielding 3 for 42) Society 175 for 3 (Jason Fenn 107*, Rob Humphreys 40)

It was beginning to feel as though every Sunday would bring rain, but it held off long enough for us to play our old friends from Britwell. The hosts batted well but shrewd bowling changes by skipper Rob Humphreys kept them in check. The usual fair Britwell declaration still presented quite a challenge, but Jason Fenn and Rob Humphreys made light of it with a classy 100 partnership to take us to victory. An early start and finish enabled both sides to get home in time for the Euro Final.

18th July v Wisborough Green Won by 7 wickets.

Wisborough Green 224 for 7 in 35 overs Society 225 for 3 (Jason Fenn 99, Peter Hardy 53*, Stuart Cosstick 33)

A new fixture, a roasting day and a fast outfield had the team hoping that the toss would be won; alas not. Early wickets suggested that a quick victory might be at hand. However, the home skipper, very well supported by some promising young players, was able to set a much higher total than had seemed likely. 12 fielders and rotation with two drinks breaks proved popular. John Symons, returning after a season and half absence, bowled as though he had never been away. Deep in batting, we won with 3 overs to spare. Jason Fenn, in another fine innings, fell just short of 100 with Stuart Cosstick and Peter Hardy giving fine support. Many thanks to Wisborough Green for an enjoyable first game.

25th July v Sparsholt cancelled.

Unfortunately, we were unable to raise a side, but biblical rain would have guaranteed no play.
